Technology that boosts productivity and strengthens the export of Colombian citrus

Celifrut adopts new technologies to ensure the quality of its products and improve efficiency in the citrus box assembly process with the automatic packing machine.

Export ready boxes from Celifrut

At Celifrut, innovation in the export of Colombian citrus is not just a goal, but a responsibility. Every improvement in our processes seeks to ensure that Colombian citrus reaches the world with the highest quality. That is why we recently took an important step in the evolution of our operation: we optimized the assembly of the boxes that protect each lemon and each orange during export.

For years, this process was carried out manually using pedal staplers. The operator placed the box, pressed the pedal, and the machine fired a metal staple that joined the flaps. It was a functional method, but physically demanding, repetitive, and slow. Moreover, it posed an increasing risk in light of new international regulations on food safety.

The FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) and the FSMA (Food Safety Modernization Act) established regulations that restrict the use of metallic materials in packaging that comes into direct or indirect contact with food. Metal staples, though small, can rust, detach, or even fall into the product. They can also compromise the integrity of the cardboard, creating microchannels that allow moisture or microorganisms to enter, potentially leading to rejections at ports and during audits.

The new box assembly system uses a hot-melt adhesive that is heated and precisely applied to the structural points of the cardboard. The machine performs the process in four automated stages: forming, glue application, pressure sealing, and conveyor belt output. The entire process features electronic monitoring and integrated safety systems that automatically stop the machine in case of any risk, prioritizing operator protection. Sensors also alert about jams or low cardboard levels, ensuring a stable, continuous, and safe workflow throughout the operation.

Thanks to this implementation, the efficiency of box assembly has increased significantly not only strengthening Celifrut’s competitiveness in international markets, but also reflecting our core values: commitment to quality, innovation, and the well being of our team. Every improvement we implement is guided by our mission to preserve the quality of citrus fruits from their origin to their final destination.

In this way, we continue moving forward with confidence toward a modern, safe, and sustainable production, reaffirming our position as a trusted ally in the export of Colombian citrus to the world.
